iPhone 11 Review: The only iPhone worth buying The iPhone 11 XR succeeds and, despite its shortcomings, becomes the new default iPhone for most people.

8.5 / 10
The iPhone 11 is the most affordable model in Apple's new range and is the only iPhone you should consider buying in India.

Highlights

The iPhone 11 gets the best dual camera setup with Night Mode.
It also packs blazing fast A13 bionic SOC and stellar battery life.
The iPhone 11, priced at Rs 64,900, still comes with an LCD display.
For now, you should read several iPhone 11 reviews, which are called "the best iPhone for most people." It's real and sad. The iPhone 11 is actually the "only" iPhone for most people, as the Pro models are over-priced, especially in markets like India. So, by default the iPhone 11 becomes the best new iPhone, and it is well known that you are really settling for the second best iPhone.

Apple wants you to love the a iPhone 11even with it's flaws. The good news is that this year's iPhone XR has fewer flaws compared to last year. While you're still getting the LCD display instead of the OLED, the camera has been upgraded so you now get the dual camera setup. If you like the iPhone XR then everything about the iPhone 11 is great.

What makes the iPhone 11 so attractive is that it was launched at a slightly more "affordable" starting price compared to the XR. It starts at Rs 64,900 in India, which is even higher, but is affordable according to Apple standards. Oh, and the colors. The iPhone 11 comes in some attractive new colors.

iPhone 11 Design

Apple has changed nothing when it comes to the design of the iPhone 11 from the iPhone XR. It has the same weight and weight as its predecessor. It falls right between the iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max in terms of size, which I think is just perfect. With a 6.1-inch display, the iPhone 11, in my opinion, has the best experience, where it's not too compact or too large.

The iPhone 11 gets the same wide grade on the front and "still tough glass" on the front and back. Toughness aside, it's still glass. And the glass scratches over time. To make the iPhone 11 look new, Apple has introduced some new colors. It comes in six colors - black, green, red, purple, white and yellow. Teal green and purple grape-like colors are easily favorites this year and are the first to be sold in India.

The frame is made of 100 per cent recycled aluminum, which is great. It is smooth and gives a matte feel compared to the glossy rear. Speaking of the back, the biggest visual change you'll notice is the camera module, which is now square-cutout in the upper left corner. On the iPhone 11, the square has a matte finish cut with the same piece of glass as the rest of the rear. In the Pro models, the square is glossy and the rest of the panel has a matte finish.

With two large circular camera sensors it will definitely take some time to get used to the square cutout. I can still use it on the iPhone 11, but the Pro models bring out the tryptophobia you have.

The iPhone 11 receives stereo speakers using the earpiece and the bottom speaker. Don't expect a headphone jack or a dongle in the box here. You get earpads with a lightning port connector and a refreshingly slow 5W charger in the box. The iPhone 11 supports a single physical nano-SIM card and additional e-SIM support.

iPhone 11 display

Apple wants you to settle for an LCD display on the iPhone 11. This is the only thing the company knows that distinguishes the phone from the Pro models. So for Rs 65,000, you are getting an LCD display, at which point OLED displays can be found on cheap phones at Rs 10,000. You need to settle for a 1792x828 resolution.

But if you don't care about the OLED vs. LCD battle and you don't see the pixel-peep, the LCD display is better with a resolution of less than 1080p. One thing is certain, this is a damn good LCD display with good brightness levels. I find the display to be cool compared to the XR, which gives it a warm tone. In this regard, I find the iPhone XR display a little more attractive with better and natural looking skin tones. Your opinion differs depending on how you like the temperature of your display.

The iPhone 11 does not have the HDR support you get on the Pro models. The brightness is up to 625 nits, which is decent compared to the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max, but again less so. Even though the resolution is less than 1080p, the videos and texts are still very sharp unless you really hover over the screen.

iPhone 11 Camera

From here, the iPhone 11 gradually gets better than the XR. We’ll start with the cameras because that’s a big upgrade you’ll notice first. The iPhone 11 gets dual 12-megapixel cameras on the back with a standard wide camera and an ultra-wide-angle camera. The TrueDepth Front Camera has been upgraded from 7MP to 12MP.

To add to that secondary camera, Apple has also introduced night mode. Instead of offering it as a separate mode, the feature is automatically turned on when the camera sensor detects low light levels. When you are in a low-light environment you will notice the half moon icon appear in the upper left corner beside the flash icon. The camera automatically determines how long the shutter speed should be slowed down with the ability to manually adjust.

Depending on how dark the environment is, you can extend the shutter time to 10 seconds or turn it off. The interface is very smooth and intuitive as you would expect. Apple may be late to join the game, but it will make its entrance with finesse.

With Night Mode, ography capture on the iPhone really reaches a new level. The difference between the XR and the iPhone 11 is staggering in low light. Photos look brighter, have better color reproduction and lower noise levels. Sometimes, the night ography on the iPhone 11 looks more natural compared to the Huawei P30 Pro or Pixel 3. Night mode on the iPhone 11 only works for a common camera and not when using a wide-angle sensor.

You can't complain about the iPhone 11 camera during daylight photography. Apple has been offering some photos that look natural in the daytime. The sensor capture's bright photos with excellent dynamic range and contrast. There is good consistency between the regular wide-angle camera and the ultra-wide-angle lens, which is great to see.

With an updated selfie camera, the iPhone 11 can take bright and sharp selfies in daylight. Some sweet portrait shots can also be taken in a variety of ways, such as the TrueDepth Camera Studio Light and Stage Light. Apple has also added the ability to record 4K videos up to 60 fps using a front camera, which is great.

Apple is holding the fort when it comes to video recording. The iPhone 11 (and Pro models) are some of the best phones for easy videography. All the cameras on the iPhone 11, including the front camera, can now record at 4K resolution at 60 fps with extended dynamic range, which is insane. The videos recorded using the main camera are extremely smooth and consistent, and using a handheld stabilizer during this time will ruin the experience. Not only do the videos look sharp and cinematic, but the recorded audio sounds loud and clear.

The latest iOS 13 beta update also allows you to change the framerate in the camera app, so users no longer have to go to Settings to do this. I didn't install the beta update at the time of the review, but I hear the feature works fine, and it also shows that Apple is finally listening to its users.

iPhone 11 Performance And Software

The iPhone 11 has a new A13 Bionic chipset similar to the Pro models. It is great not to downgrade the performance of Apple XR and iPhone 11 compared to most premium iPhones. From the user experience point of view, you will see daily fast usage with the iPhone 11 just like the iPhone 11 Pro.

Apple claims that the A13 is a Bionic 7NM based processor that delivers faster CPU and GPU performance on a smartphone. From launching and running games to browsing social media apps, the iPhone 11 is fast and smooth, but not easy. It is a processor that takes heavy computing rather than just carrying out day-to-day operations.

Out of the box, you won't notice much difference between the performance of the iPhone 11 and XR. Both the A12 Bionic and the A13 Bionic are incredibly fast and efficient processors, which have advantages that will last a few years.

The iPhone 11 goes out of the box with iOS 13, and requires the phone to be upgraded to a more stable iOS 13.1.2 update during setup. The latest operating system from Apple brings the system-wide dark mode, which also looks good on the LCD iPhone. Sadly, the benefits of dark mode in battery life are actually found on OLED iPhones.

IOS 13.1.2 is almost a smooth and glitch-free experience. Major Apple apps like Apple Music, Reminders and Mail take a new look, but you also get features like a swipeable keyboard and advanced privacy features. Apple has introduced 'Sign in with Apple', which combines your Apple ID with Face ID or Touch ID to make it easier for some apps to log in safely.

IOS 13 is faster on the iPhone 11, but I'm very happy with how it improves the iPhone XR speed. App load times and Face ID are now pretty fast, and the UI is generally smooth and time-consuming during use.

The iPhone 11 offers regional audio support via Dolby Atmos. While it is not always easy to understand the surround sound experience with the phone's speakers, the iPhone 11 does an excellent job of delivering the crisp, high-dynamic range you'd expect.

iPhone 11 battery

The iPhone XR has a terrific battery life that consistently delivers 6-7 hours of screen time. Even after a year, the battery life of the XR remains strong even though the battery's health has dropped to 95 percent. The reason I mention XR (again) is because the iPhone 11 is the same. It has a stellar battery life, which is expected to last for at least a year.

During the review period, the iPhone 11 managed to deliver a full day of battery life after heavy usage, which included watching a lot of videos, widespread use of cameras and plenty of social media browsing. More than average, the iPhone 11 will easily take you through a day and a half before you start charging.

The box comes with a 5W charger in 2019, which is reprehensible. Fortunately, the phone supports fast charging of up to 18W as the Pro models do, and charging the device much faster by getting a 10W charger or higher output output.

Should You Buy an iPhone 11?

The iPhone 11 comes with some obvious spoilers. Yes, most consumers buy is the iPhone. Yes, it's not the perfect iPhone and it comes with some glaring flaws. But if you can ignore them, the iPhone 11 is as good as it gets. The biggest improvement comes with the cameras, and if you're coming from an older iPhone, it's worth the upgrade.

Add stellar battery life and blazing fast performance to it, and you have almost everything that gives the iPhone experience. By dropping the starting price of the iPhone 11, Apple will make you believe it is an affordable iPhone even if it really isn't. But it is the only iPhone in the new line that is close to the value of money.

For iPhone XR users, I still don't recommend upgrading to the iPhone 11. You can wait about 6 months and expect prices to drop in India, or wait for the iPhone 12 to come out, which will give you a more substantial update on hardware and performance.
